The original Die Hard isn’t the origin story…

The Detective starring Frank Sinatra, based on the novel by Roderick Thorp, is the origin story. Die Hard was based on the sequel Nothing Lasts Forever.

Contractual obligations meant that Frank Sinatra was offered the role of John McClane in Die Hard.

So Die Hard doubly doesn’t need an origin story.

Freebie and the Bean – ★★★☆☆
– before The Blues Brothers, Lethal Weapon and Bad Boys. 30 years since I first saw

– unashamedly edge of the seat action, as good on small screen as big

Family Tree – (tv) ☆☆☆☆☆
– not my cup of tea

The Expatriate – ★★☆☆☆
– enjoyable Bourne/Taken lite Euro thriller

13 – ★★☆☆☆
13 Tzameti was a nail-biting headfuck. This isn’t a bad remake

Best of 2012: Film

Best of what I watched in 2012, released in 2011-2012. Suspect I saw Drive in 2011, but still…

Life of Pi was the biggest surprise, as good as reading the book and the 3D added rather than distracted. Ignoring Prometheus (because I didn’t hype myself up for it) and The Hobbit (which I haven’t seen, saw Life of Pi instead) the biggest disappointment for me was Skyfall, which my son and I now use as a bad benchmark: “Better than Skyfall?” “Worse than Skyfall?!”

Life of Pi (3D) – ★★★★☆
– when anyone says a novel is unfilmable, say Ang Lee filmed Pi. In 3D

Wild Bill★★★★☆
– feel good fucked up family mis-fortunes. See also: Shameless (US, TV)

Margin Call – ★★★★☆
– action without guns and car chases, just the money

Moneyball – ★★★★☆
– a baseball movie for the rest of us (I know nothing about baseball)

Nuit blanche (Sleepless Night) – ★★★★☆
– as good as seeing Die Hard for the first time in the cinema in the ’80s

Drive – ★★★★☆
– great car chase art house action

– madly brilliant art heist action

Honourable mentions
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy★★★★☆
– no idea what was what but it worked

Killer Joe – ★★★☆☆
– wonderfully fucked up

The Raid: Redemption★★★★☆
– how to do a fists and guns fight movie

The Dark Knight Rises (IMAX) – ★★★★☆
– how to finish a trilogy

Avengers Assemble (2D) – ★★★★☆
– possibly scored this a bit high in anticipation of a Johannson spin off, but still…

Tucker and Dale vs Evil★★★★☆
Cabin in the Woods was the hyped meta horror, but this did it first and possibly better

The Cabin in the Woods – ★★★★☆
– the reward for watching all those horror movies on VHS in the 80’s and 90’s

Kill List – ★★★☆☆ / ★★★★☆
– dark dark dark
