True Detective

Friday Night Lights – ★★★☆☆
– poignant with some tense Football action

The Lego Movie (3D) – ★★★☆☆
– enjoyable (despite Cineworld screwing up the 3D, again)

True Detective (tv) – ★★★★☆
– TV gets better and better. Journey better than destination, but what a journey

À l’intérieur – ★★☆☆☆
– brutal French horror. Incredibly inept cops and unsympathetic heroine

Fantastic Mr. Fox – ★★☆☆☆
– U.K as imagined by someone who has never been, little of the books charm

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang – ★★☆☆☆
– forgettable mildly comedic modern crime noir

House of Cards (tv) – ★★★☆☆
– more of the same, so depends if you enjoyed season 1 (or Boss)

Death of 3D (part 2D)

Paul O'Donovan - Gartner

“The issue really was there wasn’t enough content for the TV market – for the TV consumers, even some 3D satellite services have ended because there simply weren’t enough people subscribing to them”
Paul O’Donovan, Gartner

I see. Not enough content. Wait, no, not enough subscribers.

Boardwalk Empire

Boardwalk Empire

Nuit blanche (Sleepless Night) – ★★★★☆
– fast paced non-stop edge of the seat double crossing thriller

Looper – ★★★☆☆
– re-watched, as enjoyable as first time

Trouble with the Curve – ☆☆☆☆☆
– unwatchable sentimental crap. Viable alternative to the death penalty

Dredd – ★★★☆☆
– the bike and MegaCity weren’t quite there, but Anderson and Dredd were spot on

Safety Not Guaranteed – ★★★☆☆
– enjoyable hipster Primer lite, just wish indie films would ditch the indie music

Boardwalk Empire (tv) – ★★★★☆
– didn’t get it first try, requires binge viewing*

Bronson – ★★★☆☆
Scum-like institutionalized violence without reason, Tom Hardy excellent

Flight – ★★☆☆☆
don’t drink and drive

Sinister – ★☆☆☆☆
– more 8mm than super 8

Life of Pi (3D) – ★★★★☆
– as good as I could have hoped, 3D a treat for once

Arbitrage – ★★☆☆☆
– no Margin Call

*Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad: Fans who devour multiple seasons in short order are “more rewarded” because their memories of all the story threads are fresher (WSJ). Dave Winer begs to differ…

Boss (tv) – ★★★☆☆
– enjoyable melodrama

– Russell (and late great Ernest Borgnine) did it better, but fun OTT Joseph Gilgun

God Bless America☆☆☆☆☆
– fell asleep

The Amazing Spider-Man (3D) – ★★★☆☆
– not bad, but a reboot so soon? Stone & Garfield good, 3D awful

United 93★★★☆☆
– hard to watch, hard to look away

Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes)★★☆☆☆
– so, wait, that wasn’t Penélope Cruz?

Veep (tv) – ★★★☆☆
– for all that The Newsroom does wrong, the Veep does right

Wedding Crashers★★★☆☆
Tree of Life★★★★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
– …

All Good Things☆☆☆☆☆
– missing from this film.

Seeking Justice★☆☆☆☆
– be nice to see January Jones play a happy character.

– first two thirds of the film seem to be fixated on Kirsten Dunst’s breasts. And the Magic Cave? An even more implausible “We’re saved!” than the “arks” in 2012.

Take Shelter★☆☆☆☆
Michael Shannon & Jessica Chastain great, but slow build up to not a lot.

– Misfits/Heroes + Jumper + Cloverfield + Akira. Nothing new, but extra point for not sucking and not being in 3D*.

*Think the movie people have 3D wrong. Non-3D films should cost more than 3D. I’d pay more not to see a film in 3D**.
**Ok, I was joking, dammit. Raising the prices on non-3D films to try and save 3D films? Crap.
